Two SCDC Release Searches
The ordinary SCDC inmate search covers people currently in SCDC custody. Its official scope excludes offenders released from SCDC, people sentenced to county detention facilities, and people solely under parole, probation, or other community supervision. It commonly presents SCDC number, SID, name, personal descriptors, admission date, current location, sentence or offense information, and projected-release information. Data reflect the prior midnight, so even an affirmative result has a stated time boundary.
South Carolina separately publishes an SCDC Released Inmate Search. It requires a release-date start, release-date end, and county selection. Calhoun appears as code 09, while “all locations” is available when the county field is uncertain. An optional sex-offender checkbox is offered. Results show ten rows per page and may be paged or exported.
These systems answer different questions. The current search can show where a state prisoner was held and may show a projection. The released search documents an actual SCDC release entry. Neither is a general list of people released from the Orangeburg County Detention Center. A county detainee appears only if the person entered state custody.
Confirm an SCDC Release
- Open the SCDC disclaimer and accept the search terms.
- Search current custody by SCDC number or name.
- Match SCDC ID, SID, and other available identifiers.
- If state release is expected, open the separate released search.
- Choose a defensible date range and Calhoun code 09 only when that field is likely relevant.
- Review release date, release type, detainer, and county exactly as displayed.
- Compare the SCDC number with the sentencing docket and DPPPS when supervision is possible.
The released table observed in research included SCDC ID, Name, SID, Sex, Race, Age, Victim, Detainer, Sex Offender Ind, Release Date, Release Type, County, and MSO. Do not invent a definition for “MSO” because the public source did not define it. Likewise, do not describe the County column as necessarily the county of arrest or conviction. Call it the system's county field.
“COMMUNITY SUPV” is a release type, but it signals ongoing community supervision rather than the end of all justice-system control. A detainer can signal a handoff to another authority. Record the literal label. Avoid translating a terse system code into a broader claim that the source does not support.
SCDC Current Search Limits
The official SCDC scope disclaimer is essential context. The current search does not retain a person merely because that person once served a state sentence. A no-result therefore cannot establish release. It also can result from a spelling problem, identifier error, data timing, or a category excluded from the system.

Read that notice before interpreting a missing record, because it explicitly separates current SCDC confinement from county custody, release, and community supervision.
A projected date displayed for a current inmate is not actual release confirmation. Credits, disciplinary forfeiture, sentence structure, detainers, court changes, and consecutive or concurrent terms can affect it. Use Projected Release for the calculation framework, but quote the current official field and retrieval date rather than hand-calculating a person's exit.
SCDC Released Result Fields
The released form is the strongest online route for a person who actually left a South Carolina state prison. Start with a date range grounded in known facts. Use all locations if selecting Calhoun could exclude a valid result. Then match SCDC ID or SID, not just a same name. A state prisoner may have cases in several counties, and the released system's county value should not be used to rewrite that history.
The public released-search form demonstrates the date-and-county workflow. 
Its output should be read as an SCDC release record, with release type and detainer fields preserved exactly rather than reduced to “free.”
After matching a row, compare the state identifier with the sentencing case. Court disposition shows what the court ordered, while SCDC controls sentence administration and institutional discharge. DPPPS controls state supervision. VINE may provide event notification, but it is not a certified SCDC discharge record. Each source should remain tied to its role.
SCDC Records and Corrections
If public searches do not resolve the matter, contact SCDC Inmate Records at 803-896-8531 or submit a request to FOIA@doc.sc.gov, FOIA Coordinator, Office of General Counsel, SCDC, PO Box 21787, Columbia, SC 29221-1787. Include the SCDC ID or SID, full identity, and a bounded incarceration period. Ask for the commitment, release or discharge record, release date and type, sentence-calculation summary, and any releasable intake photograph.
SCDC's researched fee schedule is $0.10 per black-and-white copy, $0.25 per color copy, and $18.95 per staff hour for search, retrieval, and redaction. A deposit or prepayment may be required. Those terms belong to SCDC and must not be confused with Calhoun County's schedule. Request electronic delivery and an estimate before costly work.
An error in current SCDC detail may be reported to Ombudsman@doc.sc.gov. Provide the record identifier, the field believed wrong, and supporting official material without broadcasting unnecessary personal data. Correction fixes inaccurate content. It is not the same as expungement or sealing. Protected, medical, victim, security, and other exempt data may remain unavailable even when the releasable portion is accurate.
Calhoun State Prison Connections
No SCDC institution was identified as physically located in Calhoun County in the official institution list reviewed. A Calhoun resident or defendant may still be sent to an SCDC institution elsewhere. Search statewide current custody after a verified transfer. After discharge, search the statewide released tool, then check DPPPS, VINE, SCDC records, and the sentencing docket as the facts require.
Do not use the Orangeburg detention phone to ask for a state sentence calculation after transfer. The local facility can confirm its own custody exit and destination, but SCDC owns later state custody and release data. Conversely, SCDC does not document a community release that occurred solely from the local detention center. The regional detention page covers that local route.
A local jail exit to SCDC is a transfer, not community release. The current SCDC result can confirm the receiving custody as of its prior-midnight dataset. When the person later leaves SCDC, the released search may show a release type and date. If community supervision follows, DPPPS becomes another distinct record owner.
Calhoun Supervision After SCDC
The South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services maintains an offender supervision search. Its data reflect the previous day. Valid search combinations include first plus last name, SID, first name plus year of birth, last name plus year, or county with another identifier. An affirmative match supports supervision as of that dataset. Absence does not prove discharge.
The Calhoun DPPPS office is at 120 Mill Street, St. Matthews, with mailing address PO Box 44. Research lists 803-874-2537, alternate 803-874-2401, and fax 803-874-4575. Confirm details through the official county-office page before visiting. Community supervision is not prison custody, yet it can impose reporting and other conditions after institutional release.
A parole hearing result is also not a physical release timestamp. A grant may require conditions and processing. Verify actual institutional release through the SCDC released list or record. The Probation & Parole page explains the local office, prior-day search, and hearing limits.
SCDC VINE Release Notices
South Carolina VINE can carry SCDC and DPPPS status information and notifications. Search by offender number when possible and confirm the agency. A registration attached to county detention may not follow a transfer into SCDC, so re-register when instructed. VINE is useful for an event alert, not certification. Feed timing, identity issues, and agency changes can affect results. Adults on bond or otherwise out of custody are not tracked. Compare a release notice with the SCDC released entry and the underlying record when exact status matters. Do not use the sex-offender registry as a general release fallback; it applies only when registration law requires it.
